Invent with intention: the challenge of functional materials for sustainable energy technologies

The team of Professor Adam Duong (DuongLab), from the Hydrogen Research Institute at the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivieres, is specialized in the design of functional materials for the development of sustainable energy technologies. DuongLab develops advanced materials to produce molecular hydrogen, convert carbon dioxide into value-added products, store energy, and separate gases. To do this, the team uses supramolecular and reticular chemistry strategies to build structures with properties suitable for energy applications. This presentation covers the design, synthesis, and characterization of photocatalysts and porous materials for hydrogen production, CO2 capture and separation in binary mixtures, and electrical energy storage.

Conference summary:

D’Euclide Newton, c’est dire pendant près de vingt siècles, les phénomènes naturels ont été modélisés exclusivement au moyen de la géométrie Euclidienne. Dans cet exposé, je montrerais comment la géométrie encore enseignée au collège permet de proposer une approche tant expérimentale que mathématique des lois de la physique élémentaire, notamment dans le domaine de l’optique.
La question de la découverte des lois de la réflexion et de la réfraction, notamment pour leur utilisation dans la fabrication des instruments « ardents » sera au centre de l’exposé. C’est une brève histoire de la réfraction qui sera proposée avec la découverte majeure due Ibn Sahl au 10ème siècle Bagdad, le rôle de Kepler et finalement celui de Harriot et Snell et finalement de Descartes.
Les expériences faites avec des élèves de collèges et de lycées seront décrites.
